Qualitative Analysis of Tennis Serve

1. Tennis Serve: Preparatory Phase

A. Observation: The participant is a female, approximately 22 years of age, and has a skill level of intermediate to advance. When analyzing participant one, I used the six critical features of the Tennis Serve, which are (1) Grip, (2) Toss, (3) Preparation, (4) Continuous upward motion, (5) Follow-through, (6) Stance. I analyzed the video of participant one seven times in real time before I thought I could judge the quality of the movement.

CriticalFeature: Present
1)Grip YES
2)Toss YES
3)Preparation YES
4)Continuous upward motion YES
5)Followthrough YES
6)Stance YES

B.Evaluation & Diagnosis:

1.Grip: Hammer grip; loose and relaxed.
a.Her grip was good.
b.She did look loose and relaxed when she hit the ball.

2.Toss: Consistent placement; elevate the ball.
a.I only saw the ball tossed one time so I don’t know if her toss is consistent but her first toss looked good.

3.Preparation: Trophy; coil the body; backscratch.
a.She did a great job coiling her body.
b.I thought she did a good job bring the racket behind her back.

4.Continuous upward motion: Uncoil; extend the wave.
a.She did uncoil her body and her extension to hit the ball was good.

5.Follow-through: Release the wrist.
a.Her wrist did have movement as she hit the ball.

6.Stance: Align your heels; slow and throw.
a.Her heels were aligned in a v-shape.
b.Her feet were sideways on the line.
c.Her throw was also good.

C.Choice of Intervention for the Tennis Serve:

Overall, I thought that participant one did a great job. There were no changes that I could see to help improve her tennis serve. I would tell her that her serve was great and to keep up the great work.
