1. Beginner
2. Both hands on stick using a golf grip. Body hunched over. Legs are together and straight.
3. Legs are apart, knees bent, body upright. Front hand further down towards the middle of the stick.
4. Body up! Knees bent. Hands are apart!
Stage:
Stage: Beginner
Characteristics: She was not prepared to receive puck. She stood facing forward, in the direction of puck with stick pointed in the same direction; there was little effort made to prepare for any movement. As she turned to meet the puck, it was without any effort to stop the puck purposefully (it appears she missed it). She also exhibited poor handling skills: knees were straight, posture and arms were relaxed.
What To Change: I would instruct her to bend her knees and pull shoulders back. Her grip should be firm on the stick. As she prepares for the puck, she should be ready to turn the stick in either direction to stop it. She should keep her eyes on the puck and quickly turn to meet it.
Cue: "Bend down"(knees & hips) , "pull back" (shoulders and arms), back straight. Eyes on the target. Turn and stop it.
Analysis
Stage: Beginner
Stage Characteristics: Her stance is awkward. Her knees are straight and legs are together. She is hunched over. Her stick is straight out in front of her. She receives the puck on the off side.
What to Change: Her stance needs to be adjusted. She would need to bend her knees and sit up straighter, her legs should be spread apart for a good center of gravity. She is holding the stick right handed so her stick should be in front of her facing the right side, across and in front of her body. Her hands should be spread apart, her right hand should be lower on the stick. She should position her body to receive the puck on the stick from where she is standing so she doesn't have to move. She should not have to turn to receive the puck if she is positioned correctly in front of the person passing it. In the case of a bad pass such as the one she received she should shuffle her feet to the left or draw her stick across her body to receive the puck.
Cue: knees bent as if sitting in a chair with a slight bend at the waist, back straight. Head and eyes up. Keep your eyes on the target.
Analysis
Stage: Beginner
Characteristics: The student is bent over with knees only slightly bent. Not bending knees is lazy stance, or maybe she needed to be reminded to bend knees. She did a decent job switching sides to try to receive the puck. Hands were close to a good grip which meant that she could make an attempt on the poorly passed puck to her weak side.
What to Change: If this lesson was meant to focus on grip, then I think the video should have focused on the hand and arm position. How far should the hands be seperated, when should the grip change? Can you use one hand? Why not? Focus on the what the player will be able to do when they are holding the stick properly. Once the player feels comfortable with their grip then have them bend their knees, with a slight back bend and pass pucks at the player for practice. Passing to the weak side is beneficial because the student will have to switch sides all the time during a game or even practice.
Cue: Keep two hands on the stick, hold tight. Lower hand for power.
