Underhand Rugby Pass
Stage: Intermediate
Stage Characteristic: The five individuals in this video seem to understand the basics of a good underhand rugby pass, this is why I have placed them in the intermediate stage of the skill. All the participants do a good job of controlling the ball with both hands. By doig this they secure the ball allowing them to properly transition into the underhand toss motion. They also do a good job of looking at their intended target, this helps ensure a accurate pass to their intended target.
What to Change: In this video it is hard to come up with one thing that the five participants need to change. If I was to make them aware of one thing that could help their passing motion it would be proper footwork. Continuing to move forward with their target allows for a smooth transition of the ball. Once the ball is caught the individual needs to keep their motion going forward tyring not to break stride. All the the participants did this, just some did it better than others. This proper footwork will be key in the individuals ability to excel in the underhand rugby pass.
Cues: Watch ball into hands, secure ball with both hands, look at your intended target, footwork.
Running and Passing
Stage: Intermediate
Characteristics: Students were all moving at the same speed, making it easier to pass to each other. As soon as they caught the ball, they released it without dropping it. Their eyes were on the ball the whole time, ready to catch at any time.
Change: I didn't see anything that needed to be changed. I think this would be a great lead-up activity. I would have the students running in all directions next. This way they would not know exactly who might receiving the ball next.
Cue: "Pass, pass, pass", "Keep eyes on ball"
Sitting Technique
Stage: Intermediate
Characteristics: Students were not moving at full speed, keeping in line, or had a secondary movement after the toss
Change: The students need to step towards the person they are tossing to, and be in more of a sitting position after the toss. This secondary movement will help them better to absorb impact of an impeding tackler.
Cue: Step, toss, sit
